What to See and Do in Region 9 Traverse City

Raftshol Vineyards is a small family winery located on Michigan’s scenic Leelanau peninsula. Warren Raftshol, the owner and winemaker, was one of the pioneers to grow red vinifera grapes in the area. The oldest vines are over 20 years old and since 1999 Raftshol Vineyards has been producing quality Bordeaux-style wines, meads and ice wine.

The Zombie Run, a 5K run/walk, has become a Traverse City Halloween tradition. And what's not to like? Zombies and beer have always been a winning combination. The Simpson family has been growing fruit on the Leelanau Peninsula for three generations. Before the cultivation of vineyards, the Simpson’s were a cherry farming family caring for and harvesting over 300 acres. It was Bruce’s father, John Simpson who had the vision of vineyards and a winery.

In March of 2013 Richard Fortune became the proud new owner of Shady Lane Cellars. Rich is originally from Indianapolis, Indiana and he and his family have been visiting Leelanau County for over 50 years.

Caberfae Peaks Ski Resort boasts Michigan's highest lift-served peaks and some of the state's biggest vertical drops. With 34 runs, skiers and riders will enjoy the best advanced, intermediate, and novice ski runs in the state. As Michigan's closest up-north ski resort, you'll spend less time in the car and more time on the slopes.

Cadillac offers numerous inland lakes and two incredible paddling rivers in the Big Manistee River and Pine River. The fall color along our river basins are second to none! The high banks offers beautiful scenic fall color views from the river below that many have not experienced.

Dave and Jane were introduced to Leelanau County in the late 1980’s when they stayed at Fountain Point Resort in Lake Leelanau. They never missed a year with their family at Fountain Point until 2002 when they built a second home in Leland. In 2004 Dave retired and they moved up to their home in Leland full time.

Every Summer in late June early July of the National Cherry Festival you will find cherry delights along with parades, family and kids events and entertainment. In all, there are more than 150 events along the shores of Lake Michigan's Grand Traverse Bay.

Shanty Creek is a four-season resort featuring 72 holes of championship golf on four courses (Cedar River, The Legend, Schuss Mountain and Summit), 53 ski runs on two mountains (Schuss Mountain and Summit Mountain), 30km of cross-country skiing, a 6-lane alpine tubing park, winter sleigh rides, and Michigan’s most awarded terrain parks.

We're off the beaten path, a winery and vineyard that began with the premise that Bernie Rink's five sons needed something to do to stay out of trouble. In 1965, Bernie, then a librarian at Northwestern Michigan College, planted a one-acre test plot of wine grapes in Leelanau County to determine if commercial wine could be made locally.

Once upon a time a handsome young man named Patrick McGuire proposed marriage to his high school sweetheart, Sara Veliquette. She accepted and the two would marry the following Christmas. During their engagement many decisions would be made including where they would live and how they would make their living.
