The story goes that miners would bring a pocket meal to work filled with meat and veggies from the prior evenings dinner all wrapped up in a pastry shell. Today you will find a lot of variations on the recipe but the thick pastry shell remains. You cannot visit upper Michigan without trying a Pasty, a lot of locations will even ship their Pasty so if you are ready for a good hardy meal give it a try.
“The PASTY OVEN is a dream come true.” It started with Gene’s Mother’s recipe; which was used to open a pasty shop in Quinnesec, MI, near Iron Mountain. The Pasty Oven pastys’ popularity grew rapidly. The decision was made to build a USDA plant, so our pastys (trademark spelling) could be distributed throughout the world.
Dobber's Pasties has been in the family since it originally opened in Escanaba, Michigan in 1975, under the name of "The Red Onion Pasty Shop".
