The Thumb is a region and its own peninsula. We call it the Thumb Region because when you look at a map Michigan's lower peninsula is the shape of a mitten the this area is the mittens thumb. East of Saginaw and north of Detroit is one of the most coveted areas of michigan also called Blue Water area.
