The Outer Lighthouse is a round, cast-iron plate 35-foot tall tower topped by a round watch room and 10-sided lantern room and located on Lake Michigan, on the north breakwater at the mouth of the St. Joseph River. A packed gravel loop trail leads from the parking area to a viewing platform with breath-taking views of the marsh below. From that loop, a narrow dirt trail leads visitors down a slope and over a wooden bridge to a boardwalk through a large wetland.
